Eglin Air Force Base getting 7th special forces group and 59 new aircrafts

February 9, 2009

Maj. Gen. David Eidsaune USAF AAC AAV/CC  announced that the Air Force has signed the Initial Record of Decision to bring the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter to Eglin Air Force Base!

The announcement allows the delivery of 59 aircraft between March 2010-2015. This decision will also allow for the construction of facilities for the JSF Initial Joint Training Site, which includes instructor pilots, operations and maintenance support personnel and provides an initial capability for one squadron each of F-35s for the Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps.   The community will still see an increase of approximately 10,000 military and dependent personnel with the 7th Special Forces Group and the F-35 Training Center.  Military construction is expected to bring $700 million to the local area.

The 7th Special Forces Group, an operational unit of the United States Army Special Forces, was activated on 20 May, 1960. It was reorganized from the 77th Special Forces Group, which was also stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Its purpose is to conduct guerrilla operations and train friendly governments’ armed forces in Central and South America. 7th Special Forces Group participated in Operation Urgent Fury in Grenada in 1983, as well as in Operation Just Cause in Panama in 1989. The 7th SFG has, like all the SFGs, been heavily deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan in the War on Terrorism.

The 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) was first constituted as the 1st Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Special Service Force on July 9, 1942 at Camp William Harrison, Montana. This specialized Canadian-United States unit was organized and trained to conduct commando raids against Nazi Germany’s fledging nuclear weapons capability in the the Scandinavian region of occupied Europe. However, the unit was diverted to the campaign in the Aleutian Islands, where they were confronted by not only Japanese, but the brutal arctic climate.

Upon successful culmination of the Aleutian Campaign the Special Service Force was transferred to the European theater where they fought with distinction in both southern France and Italy, where they earned the nickname of “The Devil’s Brigade”. The Special Service Force was disbanded in France in 1945. It was reactivated on 25 September 1953 at Fort Bragg as the 77th Special Forces. In 2005, DoD recommended in its BRAC Recommendations that the 7th relocate to Eglin AFB, FL.

In 1960 the Group was recognized and designated as the 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), 1st Special Forces. The Group colors carry six combat streamers from World War II and one from Panama. In addition, the 3rd Battalion is entitled to the Army Superior Unit Award Streamer, embroidered “LATIN AMERICA 1985-1986”.

This is expected to give a boost to the local community.
